The object of the Get Together's is for the society members to meet each other face to face and exchange their research and ideas. We also considered various means of communicating with other researchers, together with a demonstration of Genealogy Resources on the Internet. We also tried to include visits to various places of genealogical interest.
There is a exchanged information on all facets of our research, e.g., family tree programs, compiled databases. The idea was to bring along photocopies of family trees and copies of other research material to swap with fellow researchers.
Researchers also have the chance to make enquiries about their own specific areas of interest.
The meetings started in 1998 and run biannually between Australia and the UK.

Thirteen Akehurst family members gathered in Melbourne in November 1999 for the inaugural Antipodean Akehurst-er Get-Together.
Highlights of the event included ample opportunities for exchanging family trees, photographs, and stories; demonstrations of the Akehurst-er website and email list; the first-ever Akehurst-er Roll Call; and a presentation by David Weatherill, President of the Genealogical Society of Victoria, on “The Weatherill One Name Study.” Attendees enjoyed a delightful and informative experience, agreeing to reconvene in two years.
Among the attendees at the 1999 Antipodean Get-Together, the following motions were passed: “This meeting agrees to form the Akehurst Family History Society.”
“It was resolved that two Conveners be appointed to lead the Society until the next meeting, with the following responsibilities:
- Prepare a draft constitution
- Co-opt assistants for various tasks (e.g., Webmaster, Registrar of Trees, Registrar of Documents Researched, Editor)
- Maintain membership in the Guild of One Name Studies
- Continue the Akehurst One Name Study
- Investigate membership in the Federation of Family History Societies
- Sustain the Akehurst Internet Mailing List
- Publish at least one Akehurst-er newsletter.”
The two Conveners appointed were David Evans and Colin Akehurst.
During the event, Akhursts Arthur and Phillip compared their family trees.

When tasked with writing a brief article on the significance of the latest index of the 1880 census, I would prefer to have seen it and had the opportunity to review the material beforehand. Unfortunately, my copy has yet to arrive.
